1. INTRO
Nothing gets you out of a gaming pickle quite like power-ups. They're fast-acting, maximum strength and unlike some prescription drugs, they don't cause annoying side effects. They may not last up to 36 hours, but their impact is immediately felt. And while not as pervasive as they once were, power-ups are still an important part of video games. Plus, they're still a riot. So put down the controller, avoid that cheat code and check out the most rejuvenating, exhilarating, and iconic power-ups of all time
2.Super Mushroom ("Mario Bros,")
Quick: What's the first thing you think of upon hearing "power-up"? If you answered anything other than "that delicious, sometimes hard to catch, mushroom that Mario eats," you're a liar.
Although not the most potent power-up, the Super Mushroom allows the breaking of bricks using one's enlarged head, extends the amount of damage a player can take before dying, and upon receipt, it's quite possibly the coolest-sounding power-up of all time. You know how it goes.
4.Star Power ("Guitar Hero/Rock Band")
Whether playing alone or with a band, the activation of Star Power is one of the most rocking power-ups of all time. You've hit all the right notes. You're rock meter is full. And now you're ready for double the points (or at least a little relief from that impossible solo). After pointing your ax to the sky — seemingly in supplication to the rock gods — your fretboard takes fire, an echo fills the air and a raucous crowd begins to clap with the beat. It's all very face melting.
3.Power Pellets ("Pac-Man")
Widely regarded as the first video game power-up, Pac-Man's scrumptious Power Pellets (or Power Pills to you Southerners) are unique in that they are essential to beating the game. Sure, you could probably clear the first levels without really needing them. But once Inky, Blinky, Pinky and Clyde pick up their pace, you're gonna need those oversized flashing dots. And how! "Here little ghosts... come and get me. A-ha! Tricked you!"

5. On Fire ("NBA Jam")
"He's heating up!" Like Star Power, this one takes a little skill to obtain. Specifically, you'll need to make three consecutive baskets to initiate it. But when you do — oh, when you do — you become unstoppable! With smoking ball in hand, players will enjoy unlimited turbo, goaltending ability and increased shooting accuracy. The fun ends when the other team scores, but words cannot describe the thrill of being "on fire," which is more than enough to get you back into any game.
6.BulletBill ("Mario Kart")
Let me get this straight: If I'm loosing a race, and chance is on my side, I can acquire a power-up in "Mario Kart" that turns me into a bullet, makes me invincible, knocks my rivals out of the way, and possibly puts me into first place?! I want that. I want to be friends with it. What must I do to get it? First, stay near the back of the pack.
Then spin the power-up roulette wheel (aka Item Blocks). If fate is on your side, you'll gain access to the most destructible and "come-from-behind" power-up in the history of video games. If only it lasted longer.source by msnbc
